About Chapel Jazz

Morpeth Chapel Jazz is a yearly event held  at the iconic heritage town of  Morpeth in New South Wales, Australia. Every year exotic jazz talent from around the country gather in  Morpeth to share their sounds and stories for an extraordinary weekend near the Vineyards and countryside of NSW.

Morpeth ChapelJazz is a joint venture of the three churches of Morpeth. Until the 1980s, Morpeth was a rundown village in fear of demolition.

Slowly it rejuvenated as a destination and  its remaining charming buildings rescued from the bulldozer. A few local businesses joined together to establish a small jazz festival in the bicentenary year of 1988.

The jazz festival soon acquired a life of its own by 2000 it had developed into a major event. Swan Street was closed for the weekend. However, by 2004 it had become too difficult logistically and the crippling costs of insurance made such a street festival unmanageable.

In 2009, the Catholic, Anglican and Uniting churches joined together to present Chapeljazz and bring traditional jazz back to Morpeth.

The aim of Chapeljazz is to present traditional jazz in a welcoming environment to jazz lovers and their families and provide an enjoyable community experience.  However we do  need to cover our costs and so we are sincerely grateful to our sponsors. We ask you to patronise them and buy raffle tickets, tea, coffee and refreshments at the venues to help keep this a free event.
